A newborn opossum has to find and climb into the mother's pouch, where it finds a teat. The newborn opossum remains in the mother's pouch for another 7 weeks, until it is large enough to detach itself from the nipple.

A gestation period of opossums lasts only 13 days. Usually, females give birth to seven to eight babies, but they can have as many as 25 young. The young are born blind, about the size of a bee. Any animal breeder or farm can show picture galleries of the animals available to prospective owners.
